Strategic Objectives and Action Lines

The central strategic goal of the Institute is to provide integrated information at the local and national level, which is related to indicators of natural disasters, to the decision-making structures of civil protection and the state.

An important factor in the object of the Institute is the holistic treatment of the issue of Natural Hazards, especially with the development of New Technologies, Processes, Materials, Applications as well as the development of Hardware and Software recording systems. A necessary condition for the achievement of this holistic treatment is the interdisciplinarity in related scientific fields, which already exists at the Ionian University.

Strategic objectives (SS) of the Institute are:

SS1. The development of research on the general subjects of Solids and Fluids Engineering, Meteorology-Oceanography and Climate Change

SS2. The development of Instrumental Observation Infrastructures with innovative hardware and software to improve risk assessment processes – vulnerability of the natural, built and cultural environment from all kinds of natural and technological disasters and their interconnection with the corresponding and relevant National infrastructures

SS3. The development of research on crisis management and the effects of Natural Hazards through innovative decision-making software

SS4. The development of research in issues of Traditional and New Techniques for the Prevention and Protection of the Environment, Structural and Historical-Monumental Constructions – Earthquake Protection

SS4. The development of research in issues of Traditional and New Techniques for the Prevention and Protection of the Environment, Structural and Historical-Monumental Constructions – Earthquake Protection

SS6. The development of research on the Development of Traditional, Advanced and New Materials in Natural Disaster Protection Applications

SS7. The development of research on issues such as the adoption of power generation methods with a low carbon footprint, the shift to renewable energy sources and the storage of energy with applications such as e.g. in energy efficient transport and maximizing the energy efficiency of the building stock

SS8. The development of educational processes and tools as well as their application in the on-site (in-situ) training of involved social and professional groups in the prevention and treatment of Natural Hazards

SS9. The creation, updating and monitoring of the implementation of protection and security plans of Public and Private entities. An example is the updating and monitoring of the implementation of the relevant plan concerning the Ionian University

SS10. The Institute’s medium-term goal is to create an operational crisis response research center in collaboration with the Region of the Ionian Islands
