Purpose

The purpose of the Institute is to address contemporary needs in dealing with pressures and threats based on:

in the fact that the Ionian Sea is the most seismic region of the Mediterranean and Europe,

in the increasingly frequent occurrence of natural disasters of all types (landslides, floods, fires, etc.) in the country and especially in the area of the Ionian Islands,

in the fact that extreme meteorological phenomena such as Mediterranean hurricanes and tornadoes occur in this geographical area,

in the lack from the academic map of systematic research and development of instrumental infrastructures for the collection of systematic data on Natural Hazards in the Ionian region, from an existing research structure that operates exclusively and comprehensively with the subject of Natural Hazards, and

to the fact that the Ionian University has academic resources, both in human resources and in infrastructure, which can support the presence of such a research body and which resources are currently scattered in more than one Department of the University, therefore it is covered the aforementioned need for interdisciplinarity and interdepartmentalism.
